FAQs

  1. Does the KittyHawk have an obstacle avoidance system?
So far it looks promising but we cannot commit to a release date. We are researching avoidance systems and working on incorporating our own avoidance system. Currently we are not committing to a avoidance system. As with other developmental options we will keep you posted and updated with our progress. When flying the KittyHawk we always encourage proper safety protocol. This includes exploring your flight path and area in advance. Be VERY familiarized with the Radio transmitter, the abilities of the KittyHawk and above all take short progressive steps. Learn and study the flight modes, flight and endurance times. SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY! Abide by the rules and laws of your state, country or region.
  2. Is the KittyHawk in compliance with the FAA guidelines?
Yes; the KittyHawk meets or exceeds the current FAA guidelines. The fact that the KittyHawk is equipped with a spotlight does not mean that we support or recommend night flight. The spot light is mounted to assist in visual acquisition and provide additional light when needed, it can also be fitted with a red lens to enhance Infra-red or night vision for dark, recessed areas and caverns.
  3. Does Mobile Recon Systems offer any insurance packages for the KittyHawk?
Currently we are exploring multiple avenues for insurance support and in-house repair. It is anticipated that we will have plans available as the delivery cycle nears for Kickstarter campaign. We will notify all of our supporters when this option becomes available. We must stress that insurance is not included or implied but may be offered as an upgradable item or implemented under your own renters or home insurance premium. In the event that any future repair is needed we have a quality staff to effect repairs at our location in the United States. Our third Kickstarter stretch goal is set to make the KittyHawk easily transportable, this means that the body will be divided into five sections that will enhance quick and easy replacement sections if necessary.
  4. How does the KittyHawk respond to lost GPS, Low battery or other technical issues?
The Pixhawk PX-4 navigation system features multiple fail safes in the event of lost GPS, transmitter signal or depleted drone battery and a series of additional scenarios. Emergency landing, loiter and return to home modes are included in the Pixhawk system to circumvent such conditions.
  5. What countries and regions do you ship the KittyHawk to?
Worldwide although shipping to other countries and regions is up to our discretion so please inquire previous to committing, shipping may be higher than posted to some areas. We charge minimal shipping and add enough to cover basic packaging. If you wish to have expedited shipping please contact us at: support@mobilereconsystems.com
  6. Some of your photos show fixed landing gear, are retractable landing gear available?
We have implemented retractable landing gear on the KittyHawk HLX4 series. The landing gear seen in some of the photos was designed for our prototype and testing phases of the kittyHawk.
  7. Are the batteries easy to switch or replace?
It doesn’t get much easier, drop the battery door at the back of the battery box, unplug the empty battery, plug in the full one and you’re back in flight. We always recommend removing the battery and placing it in the supplied charging pouch while charging. Extra (6S 10,000mAh) batteries retail for approx. $125.00 and (6S 20,000mAh) approx. $400.00
  8. Will there be a parachute available for the KittyHawk?
Currently we are evaluating several types of parachute systems. As soon as we isolate one that meets our criteria we will make it available off our website as an upgrade. We will notify all of our supporters at the proper time. It will most likely be deployed from under the canopy.
  9. Can I use my own cameras or gimbals on the KittyHawk?
Yes, the KittyHawk units we offer are designed for DIY customization. However you are welcome to replace the supplied gimbals or cameras of your choice at your own discretion and expense.
  10. What if I want to use my own guidance system on the KittyHawk?
You are welcome to replace the supplied Pixhawk with an operating system of your choice at your own discretion and expense. Be advised any alteration to the navigation or propulsion system will void any type of warrantee or insurance.
  11. Do I have to use the FR-sky FS-TH9X or Taranis transmitter or can I use my own?
The KittyHawk classic builder and Luxury builder units we offer are designed for DIY customization. However you are welcome to replace the supplied Transmitter with one of your choice at your own discretion and expense. Any RC controller compatible with the Pixhawk PX4 operating system will do.
  12. Can the KittyHawk be collapsed for easier transport?
This is one of our stretch goals! We have a portable design for the KittyHawk that is ready to be implemented. We need the funding goals of Kickstarter to implement the changes required. Please refer to the design section on our website for further details.
  13. How about a transport case for the KittyHawk?
Currently we are evaluating several types of containment and transport systems. As soon as we isolate one that meets our criteria we will make it available off our website as an upgrade. We will notify all of our supporters at the proper time.
  14. Can I mount a third GoPro or sports video camera to the front of the KittyHawk?
Yes. Although we highly recommend that it is mounted as a fixed third video camera. This is the best means to keep the KittyHawk orientation on track for the pilot. The KittyHawk already covers and supports full under and overhead videography.
  15. Can I mount a LiDar system on the KittyHawk?
There is no reason why you shouldn’t. The KittyHawk Supreme is designed as a heavy lift quadcopter, it would have no problem sustaining a LiDar unit. That configuration would be ideal for GIS, Agriculture, civil, utility and a multitude of other applications. It promotes the best of all scenarios.
  16. Can I mount a FLIR or thermal camera on the KittyHawk to work with the other cameras?
If that is your desire there is no reason why you shouldn’t. That configuration would be ideal for search & rescue, first responders, civil, utility and a multitude of other applications. It promotes the best of all scenarios.
  17. Is the spotlight on the KittyHawk adjustable?
Yes, the spotlight is servo operated and can be adjusted in flight. It is controlled by the transmitter.
  18. Do I have to leave the spotlight on the KittyHawk or can I remove it?
If you are so inclined. However if the spotlight is not on there is no power draw and when it is on it provides additional visual orientation and location prospects.
